ABOUT SARAH

"Chameleon-like" barely describes the astonishing ease with which Tony-winner Sarah Jones inhabits the characters in her solo shows, prompting The New York Times to call her “a master of the genre”. Jones is known for the mix of humor and empathy with which she tackles challenging subjects, but for the accuracy of the diverse voices she channels, based on people from her real family and community.

Our country has always been a hot mess. But now, between political rage, climate crises, and social media polarization, it’s quite literally on fire. This low-key mid apocalyptic moment has raised a question for Sarah Jones and her many characters: America, Who Hurt You?

On stages ranging from The Nuyorican Poets Cafe to The White House, from Lincoln Center to The Kennedy Center, and around the world as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, Jones’ characters and storytelling have always reflected her multi-racial roots in Queens and her education at The United Nations International School and Bryn Mawr College. She was first “discovered” by many as the performer and writer of the Broadway hit Bridge & Tunnel (Helen Hayes) which was originally produced by Oscar-winner Meryl Streep.

Her subsequent work includes the award-winning off-Broadway play Sell/Buy/Date (MTC world premiere) as well as the acclaimed hybrid documentary film of the same title, inspired by the play, in which Jones also stars. Sell/Buy/Date the film (Executive Produced by Meryl Streep) which is Jones’ directorial and screenwriting debut, had its world premiere at the SXSW Film Festival and is now streaming widely. Jones' other on-screen projects include co-starring (alongside Julie Delpy, Elisabeth Shue, Giovanni Ribisi) as Yasmin in the Netflix series, On the Verge.

Renowned as “a one-woman global village,” Jones has also given multiple main-stage TED Talks on topics ranging from invention of identity to cancel culture, which have garnered millions of views. Recently, in response to the current political climate, Jones not only developed the exciting new podcast: America, Who Hurt You?, she also adapted it to live performance. A bold and innovative mix of diverse perspectives on urgent topics, the show features her characters and incorporates interviews with celebrity guests and experts -- from Jane Fonda to Laverne Cox -- bringing humor, heart, and a healthy dose of outrage to this moment in the (allegedly!) United States.
